Discover the Te Waihora Lakeside Trail

Welcome to the Te Waihora Lakeside Trail concept, a legacy conservation project by the Waihora Ellesmere Trust that is being discussed, planned and constructed over the 3 years (opening 2027). This trail aims to open up access and enjoyment of Te Waihora, engage the local community as guardians of the lake, and showcase the extensive restoration work underway. The trail also serves as an educational journey through the rich Māori, colonial and farming histories of the area.

A Journey Through History and Nature

Te Waihora (Lake Ellesmere) is an internationally significant wetland and taonga (treasure) of tangata whenua, ecologists, hydrologists, conservationists, bird watchers, hunters and fisherman alike. The connections to the lake are vast and the significance of this taonga such that it has catalysed a strong movement to restore this (largely) forgotten lake to it’s former health.

The Te Waihora Lakeside Trail project is dedicated to preserving its ecological and cultural heritage for future generations. As you traverse the trail, you will encounter interpretive signs that tell the stories of the lake’s vibrant past and ongoing conservation efforts.

The Concept Plan

Stage 1: The Loop Trail

The first stage of the Te Waihora Lakeside Trail is a scenic loop that begins in Lincoln township. Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect on this 42-kilometer journey:

  • Lincoln Township to Motukarara: Start your adventure along the Little River Rail Trail, a picturesque path that leads to the quaint town of Motukarara.
  • Motukarara to Te Waihora: Ride above the Halswell Canal, enjoying views of lush landscapes as you approach the fringes of Te Waihora.
  • Greenpark Sands and Yarr’s Flat Wildlife Reserve: Follow the trail through the Department of Conservation (DOC) conservation areas of Greenpark Sands. Cross Yarr’s Flat Wildlife Reserve, a haven for birdlife and native flora.
  • Ararira River: Arrive at the Ararira River, where an optional crossing lets you explore Selwyn Huts and the mouth of the Waikirikiri/Selwyn River.
  • Return to Lincoln: Retrace your steps to the LII River, then meander through Ngāi Tahu mahinga kai sites of Yarr’s Lagoon/Tārerekautuku and Mangōnui, completing your loop back to Lincoln.

Embrace the Role of Kaitiaki (Guardian)

The Te Waihora Lakeside Trail is more than just a path; it’s an invitation to become a kaitiaki, a guardian of this precious environment. By exploring the trail, you’re contributing to the preservation of Te Waihora’s unique ecosystems and cultural sites.
