Springston resident and artist Mike Glover has had enough of the “sad state” of the Selwyn River. In a front page article in the Central Canterbury News (Jan 20) – which can be viewed online – Mike explains his frustration that the river at the Upper Selwyn Huts is too polluted for swimming, and has been that way for many years. Mike has created a “protest sign”, aimed at both the district and regional councils, to highlight his concerns.
ECan spokesman, Tim Davie, noted that river water quality is affected by intensive land use. Recent rule changes requiring that stock be excluded from waterways and land be managed according to recognised good management practices or better should lead to an improvement in water quality over the next 1 – 5 years.
