The Waihora Ellesmere Trust is working with the Department of Conservation to initiate a trapping program at Yarrs Flat Wildlife reserve. Trapping will target rats, stoats and possums; all introduced pests that impact on our native wildlife.

DOC200 traps will be used in the program to target rats and stoats.  The Lincoln Men’s Shed has been commissioned to build the tunnels which holds the trap. Tunnels are made to the Department of Conservation’s ‘current best practice’ design. These tunnels are designed to exclude non target species, guide target species and provide for public safety. Other trap types to be used in the reserve are the Trapinator (possums) and victor rat traps.

Currently volunteers are monitoring pests in the reserve with tracking tunnels.  Below is a tracking card showing mouse prints. Traps will be put out into the reserve in August. If you are interested in helping email manager@ankiscakery.com
